that photo you showed of a silhouetted obama, it was right next to his desk. >> you know, this photograph, we are told ended up on the desk both of president obama in the white house and of nelson mandela in his office back in south africa. we all know that this past summer when nelson mandela fell ill for the last time, president obama had a trip scheduled to that part of the world. he they did not meet but he did go inside his cell in robben island. here's what he wrote. on behalf of our family, we're deeply humbled to stand where men of such courage faced down injustice and refused to yield. mandela represented and i think michael sheir among others pointed out in the "new york times" today the kind of hope that would become the theme of the president's first campaign. what has been his influence on barack obama and his leadership? >> well, actually, that photo you just took of obama in june of 2013, that was the second time he was in that cell. i was with him the first time in august of 2006 when he was on as a united states senator from illinois when he was on a swing through africa.

next up, true or false. although president obama wants to close guantanamo and put the prisoners there on trial or send them home, congress is blocking that from happening. is that true or is that false? false, kind of. at least as of tomorrow, it is probably false. ever since president obama announced his plans to close guantanamo, congress really has been blocking him from sending prisoners to their home countries or transferring them to the real court system. you'll recall that in the '08 campaign, it was barack obama who said he would close guantanamo, running against john mccain, who said he would close guantanamo, both vying to replace president george w. bush, who also said we should close guantanamo. this did not used to be a controversial thing. but then president obama actually got inaugurated and congress freaked out, republicans and democrats in congress both. they've used the defense bill every year since 2009 to stop president obama from transferring guantanamo prisoners to their home countries

we know that this is said over and over, the best salesperson, best face of the obama care is obama himself. his senior advisers criticizing whether he has the right team around him at this point. over the next few days, honestly speaking, as they continue through december 23rd, it sounds like it has to be the president on the forefront of this. >> part of this effort is they have to -- this is targeted at the public at large consumers who want to sign up, in many ways this is targeted to members of congress, democrats who really lost faith in the white house and president's ability to manage aca. they followed the president's lead for years on this and many of them feel quite burned, particularly on the issue of canceled policies in the individual market. and the white house is having to show here they have the ability to get out in front and try to get people to follow their lead again. and members talked to folks on the hill yesterday, there's a little bit of a wait and see attitude from rank in file members. they are going to want to see how vigorous the push is before they jump in with

i was struck by the moment when president obama greeted his wife. the reality of south africa and his life now. remember, he was elected president 20 years ago next april, but now this country has 25 to 30% unemployment, poverty in the black community, yawning depth between the haves and have not. the president took to the podium this afternoon. there are many people that feel not only has not done nelson mandela but the country has fallen far short of where it should be given mandela's dream for the nation. there's a small group of wealthy class who are middle class, upper middle class, a significant white population here that controls wealth and economy and business community nittany lion country but there are still millions and millions of poor black africans who have not seen much change in their life during the 19 or 20 years of democracy. a number of speakers were referencing how there was so much more work internationally but also here in south africa many were saying as well. there was some difference between mandela's dream and reality here

i mean, they're going to just -- they're going to run out of obama care attacks eventually. because either millions of people will get new benefits, will sign up in the next month, next couple months and this won't be a good path to take outside of the republican presidential primary of 2016. or the law won't work out well in which case they'll have this bonanza, the republicans, politically speaking. this is going to run its course. but they have nothing to talk about on the economy which gives this president this great big opening. i mentioned this a moment ago. the numbers that came out today show that he has a lot of credibility to talk about how we make things better than they are now. and he has lots of ideas. he needs to make those things very concrete at this point in time. and start rallying people and winning back some of the people in the middle who he's lost in the last week or two because of the botched rollout. so he has a big opening here. >> i know one other opening i think he began to explain a little bit and i want to keep doing here because it's un-america
